Each year 8th grade students at Sandburg can apply for the Al Durante Award by writing an essay explaining why they should receive this very special award. The Al Durante Service Award criteria includes service in school and community, a positive outlook on life, kindness and caring for others, and an unselfish attitude in and out of school. These are the same character qualities that Al Durante possesses. The applications are available from the Physical Education department at Carl Sandburg. They announce the winner of the Service Award on Field Day, in front of the whole school.
